2019 Draft Order

The current Collective Bargaining Agreement changed draft pick compensation rules significantly. No longer do teams forfeit their first round draft picks to sign free agents. All first rounders are protected. Now the level of draft pick compensation is tied to team payroll and the free agent’s contract. It’s pretty convoluted. Here are the new rules.

I’ll update this page as teams gain and lose draft picks this offseason via free agent compensation, with updates made after teams officially announce signings via press release. The first round will stay the same, but the other rounds will not. The Yankees picks are in bold. If you have any questions, you can email me at mike (at) riveraveblues (dot) com.

******************************************************

Only seven players received the $17.9M qualifying offer prior to this year’s deadline, none of whom are Yankees. That means no extra draft picks in 2019. Here are the seven qualified free agents:

  • Patrick Corbin, Diamondbacks (Nationals forfeit 56th and 154th overall picks
  • Yasmani Grandal, Dodgers (Brewers forfeit 104th overall pick)
  • Bryce Harper, Nationals (Phillies forfeit 54th overall pick)
  • Dallas Keuchel, Astros
  • Craig Kimbrel, Red Sox
  • A.J. Pollock, Diamondbacks (Dodgers forfeit 64th overall pick)
  • Hyun-Jin Ryu, Dodgers (Ryu accepted the qualifying offer)

Each time they sign a qualified free agent this offseason (if they sign any), the Yankees will surrender their second highest draft pick and $500,000 in bonus money for the 2019-20 international signing period. They are locked into that 30th overall pick though. That pick stays.
