For the first time as part of his rehab from shoulder surgery, left-hander Pedro Feliciano pitched in back-to-back days and entered a game in the middle of an inning tonight. With men on second and third and no outs, Feliciano got a ground ball to second (run scored) and walked a right-handed batter. Only one of his five pitches was a strike, and a passed ball by the catcher allow the second runner to come around to score. He was pitching for Double-A Trenton. Here’s video.

Yesterday we heard that the 36-year-old southpaw is likely to make another rehab appearance on Thursday before potentially joining the big league bullpen when rosters expand on Saturday. That assumes he comes through these last two appearances as well as the next one with no problems. Either way, he’s close.

He also uncorked a wild pitch and threw nine of 17 pitches for strikes, sitting in his usual mid-80s. After three appearances in Rookie ball and one with High-A Tampa, this was Feliciano’s first minor league rehab outing with the Thunder. Here’s video.

Mike Ashmore spoke to the veteran southpaw prior to the game, and Feliciano indicated that the plan is throw another inning tomorrow — his first back-to-back appearances during this rehab stint — and then again on Thursday. If all that goes well, he could rejoin the team when roster expand on Saturday.

In his fifth minor league rehab outing overall and first with High-A Tampa, left-hander Pedro Feliciano allowed a run on four hits in one inning of work this afternoon. All four hits were singles and three of the four came off the bat of right-handed hitters. Not terribly surprising.

Feliciano, who turns 36 tomorrow, made his first four rehab appearances on three days’ rest with the Rookie Level GCL Yankees. This appearance came with one day of rest and with the promotion up to the tougher league. He was originally scheduled to pitch for High-A Tampa this past Tuesday, but the game was rained out and he instead pitched for the GCL club on Wednesday. Feliciano remains on target to join the big league bullpen in September, but he still has a number of hurdles to clear.

The 35-year-old was originally scheduled to pitch for High-A Tampa last night, but the game was rained out. It would have been his first appearance outside of rookie ball and also his first on two days’ rest. All of his other appearances have come with three days of rest. Feliciano figures to sit for another two days before making that elusive first appearance at a higher level. He remains on schedule to join the big league bullpen in the middle of September.

He has yet to allow a run during his rehab stint, but more importantly he remains healthy. There’s a chance Feliciano could be bumped up to a higher level for his next appearance, with High-A Tampa making the most sense. An early-to-mid-September return to the big league bullpen remains the target.

In his latest minor league rehab appearance with the Rookie Level Gulf Coast League Yankees, left-hander Pedro Feliciano retired all three batters he faced — the first two on ground balls, the last on a called strike three. He struck out the side in his first rehab game four days ago. No word on his pitch count or anything, but I doubt it was more than 12-15 or so.

Feliciano, 36 in less than two weeks, is coming off major shoulder surgery. His 30-day rehab window expires on September 9th, so if all goes well between now and then, he’ll be able to rejoin the bullpen as the third lefty specialist once rosters expand. Obviously “all goes well” is a mighty big assumption at this point. The Yankees actually hold a $4.5M club option for Feliciano next season, but I can’t imagine they would pick given what we know right now. Let’s see him face some big league hitters first.

He wasn’t exactly a hard-thrower to start with.

Feliciano has yet to throw a meaningful pitch for the Yankees since signing a two-year, $8M contract prior to last season. He had major shoulder surgery last September after trying to rehab the injury and is just now getting back into game action. He’s been throwing bullpens and live batting practice in recent weeks. Assuming he makes it through the rehab well — a massive assumption — we could actually see Feliciano in the big leagues when rosters expand in September. Maybe he has a 2009 Damaso Marte run in him. That would be sweet.
